A 180-megapixel medium format sensor from Sony is reportedly ready for mass production. What we know, what is still rumor, and why more megapixels are not the whole story.

Medium format cameras like the Fujifilm GFX100S II and the Hasselblad X2D II 100C have worked with around 100 megapixels for years. Now a new rumor suggests that Sony has a 180-megapixel medium format sensor that is ready for mass production.

What we actually know

Very little. The report comes from Sonyalpharumors, and as of today there are no official specifications and no announcement. The site speculates that the sensor could be partially stacked, which would mean faster readout. That is a guess, not a fact.

It is also unlikely that Sony will build its own camera around it. Fujifilm and Hasselblad already use Sony sensors of about 44 × 33 mm, and the new sensor is expected to have the same size. So the most likely buyers are other manufacturers. Earlier reports claimed that Fujifilm is working on a 180 MP GFX camera, but not before 2027.

The numbers in perspective

On the same sensor area, 180 megapixels means much smaller pixels. The pixel pitch would be around 2.8 micrometers, compared to 3.76 micrometers on the Hasselblad X2D II. That is roughly the pixel density of a 107 MP full-frame sensor.

For comparison, the Phase One IQ4 offers 151 MP on a larger sensor (53.4 × 40 mm). Sony’s own 247 MP IMX811 exists as well, but it is designed for industrial use, not for photography.

Do we need it?

Going from 100 to 180 megapixels is not a 1.8x gain in detail. The image gets about 1.34 times wider and taller, so the gain is real but smaller than the headline suggests. And the sensor is only one part of the chain:

Lenses must resolve that detail, and many will not.
Smaller pixels make diffraction visible at wider apertures.
Files get huge, and storage and computers have to keep up.
Every speck of dust shows at 100% view.

For landscape, architecture, studio and reproduction work, the extra cropping room and detail would be welcome. For most other work, and especially for images that end up on a screen, the limit is rarely the sensor.

My take

I enjoy following this kind of development, but I would not trade a good lens, good light and a good idea for megapixels. The best photographs I know do not become better with more resolution. They become better with more attention.
